Tourism Minister Mamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane said they will be working with the Free State Department responsible for tourism in order to promote tourism in the province. The Minister was replying to Tour Mzansi's question regarding her department’s plans to promote township tourism in small provinces like Free State and Northern Cape during media interviews at the launch of the World Tourism Month at Drakenberg Sun Hotel in Kwazulu Natal on 24 August.
Kubayi says her department’s strategy is on a national scale and they have to work with provincial departments as each province has its own strategies and plans and they need to find ways on how both National and Provincial departments can help each other boost provincial tourism.
According to Kubayi, The National Tourism Department has community based projects they focusing on and supporting and one community project they supported in Qwaqwa was building of a lodge.

Kubayi explains “We have various projects that we do. If you look at the Free State there is quite a lot that we can do. There is the Basotho Cultural village in Qwaqwa that is doing very well, which we work with the provincial department on”
Kubayi explained that they have master plans and programmes in place but they need to work with provincial departments to understand their strength's and weaknesses and how to improve and capitalise on opportunities provincial tourism has.
Kubayi further explained that festivals such as Macufe need to be used by the people of the Free State to promote tourism. Its important to get people to know about Macufe and ways it can be marketed to both local and international tourists, while also being used by locals to promote the products and services they offer.
Kubayi applauded Kwazulu Natal for always being a step ahead and said they can be used as a model by other provinces to learn from.
“We will be working with the Free State province to up the marketing so that what they are doing can be elevated,” concluded Kubayi.
