Chef Tebogo is passionate about Cooking
Teboho Masakala
The tourism and Hospitality
sector is blessed with people behind the scenes who make hotels and lodges,
places to visit and to enjoy good food. Such people are chefs who work hard to
dish mouth watering food that leaves us wanting more however not often are they
recognised or acknowledged. However they take time preparing nice meals and
creating different types of dishes to accommodate all people.
Without Chefs the tourism and
hospitality sector will suffer tremendously as they contribute a lot. One such Chef
is Tebogo Godfrey Masopye hailing from Bloemfontein who has contributed his
cooking skills to the tourism and hospitality sector through various hotels and
lodges he has worked for.
Tebogo Geoffrey Masopye has since
young, had a dream of being a chef which he finally made into a reality. To
date, he has worked for numerous hotels and lodges and currently works in the
Human Resource department at Imvelo Safari Lodge in Bloemfontein but he still
cooks when he gets the chance and was often invited to judge food
competitions.
His smile and humility Charms
guests at Imvelo Safari Lodge and he always greets guests with energy, smile
and vigour that will sure make you remember him when you visit Imvelo Safari
Lodge.
"Spel-in" as Tebogo is
known, got an opportunity to follow his dream when he was among 80
youth who did a year long (2011-2012) Hospitality Management Learnership,
hosted by the Department of Tourism.
They were trained under the
Hospitality Youth Initiative (HYI) programme in Grahamstown Eastern Cape. The
training consisted of both theory and practical’s which helped hone Tebogo’s
cooking skills.
The HYI was launched by
former Tourism Minister Thokozile Xasa in 2011 and aims to
train young people aged between 18-35 in order for them to find
employment in the Hospitality Industry.
While in Grahamstown he
worked at a well-known restaurant as a chef, after the learnership ended
but returned to Bloemfontein and that is where the opportunity to showcase his
skills as a chef came about.
Once in Bloemfontein, he worked
for various hotels and lodges as a chef and in 2013 he was offered an
opportunity to work in Dubai for Marriot Hotels but due to financial problems
he could not go. However his skills were noticed by CUT FM Station Manager
Laila Nnyane who asked him to feature on one of the station's shows and to host
the braai master competition for students.
“The largest number of people I
have cooked for was 1000. I always try to play around with food and prepare
mouth-watering food that people will love. Food makes people happy but
good tasting food excites them,” said Tebogo.
Tebogo believes that only the sky
is the limit and his dream is to have a restaurant in the township and tour the
Free State to encourage learners who want to be chefs.
He Aims to make a name for
himself in the tourism and hospitality Industry and leave his vital contribution that will be
remembered for ages to come.
“Never stop
dreaming and always follow your heart” concluded Tebogo.
