Tourism Minister Mamoloko Kubayi
kicked off the World Tourism Month media launch as part of preparations for the
World Tourism Month which is held in September, and Tourism Day to be
held on 27 September in Durban. The Media launch was held at
the Drakensberg Sun in Kwazulu Natal on 23 August.
The Tourism Minister said it important
that aggressive marketing is done to target every South African young and old.
Kubayi added that South Africans need to explore their country and travel
within the borders of the country and as such travelling and tourism
packages should be inclusive of all income-earners and not only high income-earners.
One of the issue’s worrying the
minister is the rampant crime in South Africa, as it scares away tourists. To
curb this challenge she has had talks with Police Minister Bheki Cele to
find ways to fight crime targeting the tourism sector in order not to chase
away tourists.
This year the theme is "Tourism
and Jobs for a better future for all". Minister Kubayi has tasked her
department to think differently in their marketing approaching adding that
young people who are tech savvy should be accommodated through means they use
to communicate like social media.
Cleaners, domestic workers and
gardeners are specific groups targeted by the Minister as the majority of them
cannot afford tourism packages as they are low income earners. However
Kubayi has a programme where this class of low income earners will be
accommodated, in a bid to encourage all South African’s to become tourists in
South Africa.
The Minister has made a call to all
South Africans to be ambassadors of the country “ We are ambassadors of this country,
what we say matters. As true ambassadors let’s do justice to our country,”
concluded Kubayi.
