Kwazulu Natal Natal Tourism (KZN-Tourism) hosted
members of both national and local media on 2 April to tour and explore what
KZN has to offer in terms of local tourism. Members of the media visited
tourist attractions in the townships of Durban which are rich in history.
History that has played a major role in the emancipation of South Africans from
Apartheid.
Hosted Media included Mangaung Issue from
Bloemfontein, The City Press, Sowetan, Mpumalanga News, Pietermaritzburg News
and Rising Sun. The first stop was Mahatma Gandhi’s house in Phoenix, Durban
where the role Gandhi played in fighting for human rights and the
community is outlined in detail.
Gandhi lived in the house for 21 years. It was
rebuilt in 2006 after being burnt during the 1985 Inanda Riots. Gandhi was an
activist, lawyer and politician.
The next stop was a visit to John Langa Dube’s
Monument and house. John L. Dube was the first President of the ANC. The
monument houses his grave and that of his family and also the school that he
helped found, called the Ohlange Institute and High School.
This is the very same school that Nelson Mandela
voted at for the first time on 27 April 1994. Tour guide Mandla Nxumalo
said Mandela chose the to vote at the school to honour John Dube. He also went
to great lengths about meeting Mandela and what it was like seeing
him for the first time.
The trip focused on the importance
of local/ township tourism and the role it plays in educating about the history
of South Africa. It also encourages South Africans to be tourists in their
own communities.
